What Is Xarelto?
Xarelto is a novel oral anticoagulant. It is prescribed to:
- Reduce the risk of stroke in people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AFib)
- Treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) and reduce the risk of recurrence
- Reduce the risk of DVT and PE after hip or knee replacement surgery
It works by reducing your blood’s ability to clot. Unlike warfarin, Xarelto does not carry dietary restrictions or require routine monitoring.
Xarelto Bleeding Risk
All anticoagulants can cause major bleeding events including spontaneous bleeding. But, there is a simple antidote for warfarin that allows the blood to begin clotting again. There is no reversal agent for Xarelto. When bleeding occurs with Xarelto, patients can bleed to death before the drug has time to leave their bodies. Those who survive can suffer severe blood loss causing brain and organ damage.
An injury that would have been minor can become fatal due to uncontrollable Xarelto bleeding.
Xarelto Side Effects
Xarelto side effects can include:
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Rectal bleeding
- Bleeding in the brain
- Excessive bleeding that cannot be controlled after an injury
- Reduced platelet levels
- Blood clots
- Pulmonary embolism
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Abnormal liver function
- Numbness or tingling in the muscles
- Loss of ability to control movement
- Wound infections and complications after surgery
