Taxotere is one on the most commonly used chemotherapy drugs for breast cancer. It is in a class of drugs called taxanes. Taxotere has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat:
- Breast cancer
- Head and neck cancer
- Non-small cell lung cancer
- Advanced stomach cancer
- Metastatic prostate cancer
Taxotere is also being investigated to treat:
- Small cell lung cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Bladder cancer
- Soft tissue sarcoma
Failure to Warn and False Claims
Sanofi failed to warn American doctors and patients of the risk of permanent alopecia. Alopecia is the technical term for hair loss. A permanent hair loss warning was not added to Taxotere’s U.S. label until 2015, even though European labelling contained the warning as early as 2009.
At the same time the company falsely claimed that Taxotere was more effective in treating breast cancer than the less toxic alternative Taxol (paclitaxel). This false claim prompted a warning letter from the FDA, for misbranding, in 2009.
Taxotere Hair Loss Matters
Women should have been told the truth and given the opportunity to choose. Had they known that they could choose a safer drug that was just as effective or possibly more effective, most would probably have decided against Taxotere. And that was the point. Sanofi hid the risks and lied about efficacy so it could sell more Taxotere and make more money.
If you are living with permanent hair loss as a result of using Taxotere, you do not have to let the pharmaceutical company get away with the lies it told at your expense. You can join other women like you in taking back the ill-gotten gains. You may be able to recover substantial compensation for Taxotere hair loss, as well as the satisfaction of holding Sanofi accountable.
Permanent hair loss can be devastating for cancer survivors, especially when it is an unexpected side effect of treatment. The harm caused by permanent hair loss can include:
- Altered sense of self
- Body image problems
- Lowered self-esteem
- Anxiety and distress
- Avoidance of social activities
- Apprehension or unwillingness to return to work
- Loss of privacy
